Proactive Environmental Management: the key to sustainable project development

Project developers are now increasingly integrating environmental and sustainable development considerations at the heart of their activities, recognizing their crucial importance in achieving social acceptability and ensuring the long-term sustainability of their operations. However, despite this consideration, environmental and social constraints as well as restoration imperatives often remain relegated to the background during the project development process, which can lead to costly complications and delays. At every stage, developers find themselves juggling technical, economic, and regulatory requirements, while trying to harmonize these elements with environmental concerns. Reconciling deadlines and sustainable aspirations is no easy task!
One reason for this is the complexity of the environmental studies and authorizations required from various government bodies, which may be underestimated in terms of time and resources needed. In addition, the pressure to speed up project deployment, often due to fluctuating raw material prices, can lead to compromises in the consultation and information process with local communities, thus compromising social acceptability.
From a sustainable development perspective, efficient management of production processes is also essential. An inefficient process can not only lead to raw material and energy losses, but also generate waste or higher chemical consumption. It is therefore crucial to take the time to address these issues right from the design stage. For example, if the water treatment system is defined too late in the project, optimizing recirculation, and reducing freshwater consumption at source may prove more difficult. If these considerations were not factored in, larger infrastructures and greater use of chemicals may be required.
The end-of-life site reclamation must also be considered at the design stage. Decisions taken at this stage can have a significant impact on the cost and feasibility of subsequent reclamation. For example, segregation of materials during construction may initially seem restrictive, but it greatly facilitates long-term site reclamation and even progressive reclamation.
To avoid these pitfalls, it is crucial to put in place optimized permitting strategies, detailed action plans, regular consultations with stakeholders and rigorous environmental monitoring right from the start of the process. In addition, it is necessary to invest in staff training and effective environmental management systems, adapted to the specific context of the project. Ultimately, optimized environmental management can not only reduce the risks and costs associated with projects, but also enhance their social acceptability and long-term sustainability.
